Since its inception in 1971, Starbucks Coffee has become one of the most recognizable and beloved coffee brands in the world. In 1982, Howard Schultz joined the company as director of retail operations and marketing. He was inspired by the Italian espresso bars he had visited while on vacation in Milan and wanted to bring that same experience to Starbucks customers. He proposed introducing espresso drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes to the menu but was initially met with resistance from Baldwin and Bowker who were concerned about diluting their focus on quality coffee beans. However, Schultz persisted and eventually convinced them to give his idea a try.

The introduction of espresso drinks proved to be a huge success for Starbucks. Customers loved the new drinks and soon lines were forming out the door of every store. To keep up with demand, Schultz opened more stores throughout Seattle before expanding into other cities across America. By 1992, there were 165 stores nationwide serving millions of customers each year.

In 1996, Starbucks went public on the stock market which allowed them to expand even further into new markets around the world including Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Today there are more than 30,000 stores worldwide serving over 90 million customers each week!

Starbucks has also been successful in creating an iconic brand identity that is recognized around the world thanks to their unique logo design featuring a two-tailed mermaid encircled by stars; their signature green color palette; their use of music; their commitment to sustainability; their loyalty program; and their commitment to giving back through various charitable initiatives such as “Cups of Kindness” which donates 25 cents from every purchase towards local charities around the world.
